Client: State of Hawaii – University of Hawaii Systems
Service: Structural, civil and electrical engineering for PV canopies and BESS integration
Completed on: July 2019

The Leeward Community College project added 3,570 PV modules on new canopy structures over an existing parking lot, configured into 434 strings and 43 inverters, with a 12,662 kWh battery system rated at 2,340 kW. Hawaii Engineering Group’s scope included establishing design criteria, foundation design for carport structures, and review of manufacturer framing and submittals. The team integrated the new PV/BESS system with an existing zero-export rooftop PV system and implemented a new SCADA link for HECO datalogging. Modifications to the outdoor 12.47 kV switchgear provided zero-export control and upgraded metering, delivering a coordinated, utility-compliant system that maximizes the campus’s renewable generation while maintaining grid constraints.
